Overview

The Encyclopedia of Native & Non-Native Plants in Eastern Arabia is a first-of-its-kind publication that provides a comprehensive guide on cultivating plants in Eastern Arabia from Kuwait to the coast of Oman on Arabian Gulf. Comprising six volumes and 3500+ pages, it features a thorough listing of more than 800 plant species arranged along with descriptive details such as lifespans, adaptability, cultivation and forms.

It compiles the applications of each plant listed. With economic, medicinal, landscaping and environmental uses consolidated in one place, the book serves as a reference tool for professionals dealing in diverse sectors such as agriculture, health, medicine, engineering and architecture, to name a few. The encyclopedia has been developed by the Gulf Organisation for Research & Development in collaboration with Qatar Ministry of Municipality.

Scope

With detailed listing of all species from a range of angles, the Encyclopedia of Native & Non-Native Plants in Eastern Arabia is one of the most comprehensive scientific archives conceived and developed about plants existing within the Eastern Arabian habitat. Classifying the species according to their growth forms, the six volumes feature plant habitats, requirements, tolerance levels, applications and nativity among other aspects. The scope of the encyclopedia covers all existing plant types in the Eastern Arabia that include trees, shrubs, groundcovers, climbers, grasses, succulents and desert plants.

Trees
The opening volume of The Encyclopedia of Native & Non-Native Plants in Eastern Arabia consolidates all plant species with trees as their predominant growth form. Organized in alphabetical order, the book provides detailed information on optimum growth conditions, cultivation methods and durations, key requirements and major uses of the species existing in the Eastern Arabia.

Shrubs
Titled ‘Shrubs’, the second volume provides a thorough listing of small- to medium-sized woody plants often distinguished from a tree by their multiple stems and shorter height, usually under 3 meters. Titled ‘Groundcovers’, this two-part volume of the encyclopedia covers one of the most common plant species growing in the Eastern Arabia. Herbs, vascular plants that do not develop woody tissues, have been classified as groundcovers in this particular volume.

Climbers & Grasses
The penultimate volume features two plant species, namely ‘Climbers’ and ‘Grasses’. Climbers climb trees and other tall objects by entwining their stems around trees and branches. Grasses have jointed stems and bladelike leaves. Grass used in a landscape is customarily referred to as 'lawn', while grass used on a baseball field or golf course is referred to as 'turf’.

Succulents & Desert Plants
The fifth and final volume of the encyclopedia covers succulents and desert plants, commonly marked by their low water intake and extreme drought tolerance.
