Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs)
What is an EPD ?
An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is acquired by an organization to disclose the environmental performance of their product across its entire life cycle. This includes stages such as raw material extraction, transportation to the manufacturing site, production processes, distribution to the market, end-use, and end-of-life management including reuse and recycling. The declaration is based on a comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study.
An EPD provides transparent and third-party verified environmental data, enabling comparisons between products that serve the same function due to its standardized nature.
The International Green Mark (IGM) develops EPDs for construction products in compliance with ISO 14025 and following the Product Category Rule (PCR) EN 15804, with the background LCA report based on ISO 14040/44.

Mutual recognition agreements
To increase harmonization and comparability of EPDs, IGM collaborates with peer program operators to sign Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs) following a thorough review of the two systems to assess similarities and differences in guidelines and procedures. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is typically signed beforehand to initiate collaborative discussions.
The MRA allows EPDs registered under IGM to display the peer program operator’s logo, and vice versa, for an additional fee. EPDs with dual registration are listed on both IGM and the respective organization’s website, allowing published EPDs to gain acceptance in a wider international market.
