A Digital Platform for Environmental Performance Data and Traceability in Construction

The project develops a regionally tailored digital platform and data ecosystem to improve environmental performance assessment for construction materials and products in Qatar and Spain. It addresses weak data representativeness in Environmental Product Declarations by creating a stronger information base for supply chains, embodied carbon, and sustainability reporting.

EPIC-DATA combines localized life-cycle assessment data, digital workflows, and interoperable data structures so environmental information can move more reliably across manufacturers, certification systems, and project teams. The initiative supports more accurate decision-making for green building schemes, export readiness, and low-carbon construction practices.

The platform connects environmental product data with digital traceability mechanisms such as product passports, structured datasets, and machine-readable formats. Its goal is to make environmental information auditable, reusable, and easier to integrate into certification, procurement, and compliance workflows.

The collaboration brings together GORD’s regional sustainability expertise and Blue Room Innovation’s digital product passport and traceability capabilities. Together, the partners aim to build a web-based tool, improved datasets, and prototype digital passports aligned with emerging international requirements.

Methodology

The project is structured in three phases: diagnosis, creation of an enhanced LCA database, and tool deployment. It starts by collecting existing environmental and operational data from construction-material value chains, then evaluates quality using recognized assessment methods and defines improvement pathways for both foreground and background datasets.

Blue Room Innovation leads the digital architecture, including data structuring, ETL logic, regionalisation algorithms, interoperability layers, and web-platform development. GORD leads local data gathering, sector validation, environmental methodology adaptation, and the integration of results into regional sustainability and certification contexts.

The technical stack includes algorithms for data correction, regionalization, uncertainty handling, machine-learning assisted extraction of EPD information, and interoperable publication through ILCD and JSON-LD structures. A prototype database, digital product passport workflow, and secure web tool are used to test the approach in pilot construction scenarios.

Outcomes

EPIC-DATA is designed to deliver a new dataset for environmental assessment, a prototype web-based platform, algorithms for correcting foreground and background data, and a pilot digital product passport. These outputs support faster and more reliable creation of EPDs and improve the traceability of environmental information across the construction supply chain.

For Qatar, the project strengthens the evidence base for local materials, supports the International Green Mark scheme, and improves readiness for future export and compliance requirements such as CBAM-related embodied carbon reporting. For Spain, it expands digital traceability and sustainability tooling in construction and opens further commercial pathways around digital product passports and interoperable compliance systems.
